2:45-3:45
Dr. Brian Beatty Professor of Instructional Technology San Francisco State University Blurring the boundaries of space and time: The HyFlex approach to course design
What happens when students are given viable options for participating in learning events such as graduate courses? If you had the option of participating live in person, live online, or asynchronously online, which would you choose? Would it be the same choice for each week (or topic) in a given course of study? We've been developing graduate courses that turn over the decision about participation mode to the student, allowing each student to choose how they participate each week: live in-person, live online (using synchronous webinar software), or asynchronously online (using a standard LMS with discussion forums). Our success has helped us meet organizational goals such as 1) building an online program that complements an existing in-person program, 2) providing flexible participation modes for students struggling with the demands of school, work, family, and travel/commuting, 3) allowing students to take multiple courses that "meet" at the same time, enabling a quicker path through a degree program without adding more resources. In this session, we'll review the HyFlex design and discuss great ideas for reaching learning targets through multiple participation paths.
3:50-4:50
Jennifer Whiting Creative Director Florida Virtual School The story of the Florida Virtual School: Innovation in K-12 online education
